Honey is a sweet gift of nature, made by bees, as they use nectar from flowers. That is a process of converting the nectar into honey, which is harvested from the hives for human consumption.

Honey is different by color (the clear, golden amber, darker) and the flavor, which vary based on the types of flower from which the nectar was harvested.

The production of the honey is also different, which also depends on the area where it is harvested.  The Australian researchers have found one type of honey, called Manuka honey, which is better than all known antibiotics.

Manuka honey is produced by bees that are feeding on the nectar of Leptospermum Scoparium, or New Zealand’s Manuka bush or of the tea trees, native to Australia and New Zealand only.

The healing effects of this remarkable type of honey are seen in killing bacteria and bugs, which aren’t able to build up the immunity of it. Manuka honey may be a first place to fighting resistance issues, where many of the last resort antibiotics are failing against antibiotic-resistant superbugs, thus saving thousands of lives worldwide.

Fights superbugs

According to Dr. Dee Carter from Sydney, antibiotics are with short shelf lives, and most of the bacteria they attack quickly become resistant, so they become useless over time.

However, many reports, published in the media claimed that Manuka honey killed almost every bacteria, and none of the bugs tested were able to survive that honey treatment.

Dr. Carter, explains that its ability to be so effective is due to the particular compounds, like methylglyoxal, found in the Manuka honey that causes multi-system failure in the bacteria. Thanks to that compound, they are killed before they are able to adapt themselves and build up immunity.

What are other benefits of Manuka honey?

Here are the biological properties of the Manuka honey:
